Vigo County Council adopts a $112 million budget for 2027 on a 5-2 vote

If you pay Vigo County taxes, the 2027 budget now has a number. The council voted 5-2 Monday to adopt it, and County Auditor Larry Hutchings put the final total at $112,132,839. Changes included removing appropriations for more jailers, cuts in the area planning department and lower payments toward the Terre Haute Convention Center.

There's a catch. The council's Oct. 26 vote was 4-2, at a meeting billed as a workshop, and the state Department of Local Government Finance said it was reviewing whether that vote followed the law. Monday, a motion to rescind needed to be unanimous and Brenda Wilson voted no, so it is still unknown whether the Oct. 26 vote was valid.
