Vigo County Council adopts a $112 million budget for 2027 on a 5-2 vote

Monday's budget came in about $2 million under the proposal

council vote on the budget Monday

If you pay Vigo County taxes, the 2027 budget now has a number. The council voted 5-2 Monday to adopt it, and County Auditor Larry Hutchings put the final total at $112,132,839. Changes included removing appropriations for more jailers, cuts in the area planning department and lower payments toward the Terre Haute Convention Center.

There's a catch. The council's Oct. 26 vote was 4-2, at a meeting billed as a workshop, and the state said it was reviewing whether that vote followed the law. Monday, a motion to rescind needed to be unanimous and Brenda Wilson voted no, so it is still unknown whether the Oct. 26 vote was valid.

  • Raises: $4,000 for full-time employees, $1 an hour for part-time
  • Salary ordinances: set at 2026 levels for now, to be amended
  • Next: elected officials' salary ordinances, which need a unanimous vote

The budget went from surprise vote to revised adoption in a week

  1. Oct. 26Council votes 4-2 to approve the budget at a meeting billed as a workshop.
  2. Oct. 28State says it is reviewing whether the Oct. 26 vote followed the law.
  3. Nov. 2Council fails to rescind the Oct. 26 vote, then adopts a revised $112,132,839 budget.
