COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of the Wabash Valley is hosting a Stand Down event for veterans and their families today from 2 to 4 p.m. at VFW Post 972 in Terre Haute in partnership with Disabled American Veterans + Duke Energy + Union Health.  WTHI-TV
  • The 2026 Senior Expo, in its 25th year (sponsored by Tribune-Star, Union Health and THRIVE West Central), was held Thursday at The Meadows shopping center and featured dozens of exhibitors offering free information, products, and services for seniors.  Tribune-Star
  • Thrive West Central has been awarded millions from the READI 2.0 program and Lilly Endowment to support housing improvements in Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo counties. Builders and developers can now apply for projects that offer independent living units.  WTHI-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Duke Energy broke ground yesterday morning on its $3 billion project at the Cayuga Generating Station to replace coal-fired units with two new natural gas turbines that will improve energy efficiency.  Tribune-Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wayne Newton, a Terre Haute native killed in the Pearl Harbor attack 84 years ago, will be laid to rest tomorrow at Grandview Cemetery with full military honors after his remains were identified last September.  WTHI-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Duke Energy broke ground today on two combined cycle natural gas turbines at Cayuga Generating Station in Vermillion County, and the plant will produce 1,476 megawatts when the first unit comes online in 2029 and 4,000 jobs are supported, while $75,000 in grants benefits local projects (fire, recreation, heritage).  WTHI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ivy Tech Community College hosted its 26th annual Scholarship Scramble at Idle Creek Golf Course, presented by First Financial Bank, to raise scholarship funds for students in Terre Haute and Greencastle—helping invest in the local community.  WTHI-TV
  • Mark Bennett reports that local experts are studying strategies from other college towns to help retain graduates in Terre Haute. He noted that while younger residents often prefer larger cities (as seen in past trends), many might view the city differently as they grow older.  Tribune-Star
  • Gov. Mike Braun signed a bill restricting cell phone use from bell to bell in schools, with exceptions (for emergencies, individualized education programs, and medical needs) to help students focus and support teachers in class.  WTHI-TV
