Firefighters responded just after 10 p.m. on Thursday to a blaze at 3235 North 21st Street in Terre Haute where two adults and five children evacuated safely, and officials are investigating a cause which does not appear suspicious.

State Sen. Greg Goode’s language to set up a local oversight board for managing county funds to improve schools has reached the governor’s desk for final review—House Enrolled Act 1515 would allow Vigo County to transfer funds to meet school needs.

After a long session that went into early Friday morning, Indiana lawmakers approved a two-year, $45 billion state budget that raised cigarette taxes and adjusted funding for education and public health while giving Gov. Mike Braun control of the IU Board of Trustees, ending the 2025 legislative session. The Indiana House passed the measure at 12:45 a.m.—it also includes $1.3 billion in property tax relief for homeowners.

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has strongly opposed Union Health’s merger of Terre Haute Regional Hospital, warning that the consolidation may create a regional monopoly that could raise healthcare costs & limit patient access.

The state review is underway, and the Indiana Department of Health will hold a town hall on May 1 at Ivy Tech campus to discuss the proposal.
