ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters responded just after 10 p.m. on Thursday to a blaze at 3235 North 21st Street in Terre Haute where two adults and five children evacuated safely, and officials are investigating a cause which does not appear suspicious.  WTHI-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Terre Haute Children’s Museum 17th annual “Top Chefs: We Love the 90s!” fundraiser sold out — public donations remain open — and all proceeds will support programs that spark curiosity and promote science and technology for kids in the Wabash Valley.  Tribune-Star
  • David Bowden, the longtime artistic director and conductor of the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, will conduct his final performance as artistic director on May 3. He built a deep bond with the community during his 28-year tenure.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Internationally renowned author Brian Fox Ellis will lead a free public writing workshop at Marshall Public Library at 4 p.m. on Wednesday—registration is required.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday, INDOT will close a section of State Road 159 in southern Vigo County for culvert replacement between East Fox Road—near Blackhawk—and French Drive. It is expected to reopen in mid-May, weather permitting.  WTHI-TV
  • State Sen. Greg Goode’s language to set up a local oversight board for managing county funds to improve schools has reached the governor’s desk for final review—House Enrolled Act 1515 would allow Vigo County to transfer funds to meet school needs.  Tribune-Star
  • After a long session that went into early Friday morning, Indiana lawmakers approved a two-year, $45 billion state budget that raised cigarette taxes and adjusted funding for education and public health while giving Gov. Mike Braun control of the IU Board of Trustees, ending the 2025 legislative session. The Indiana House passed the measure at 12:45 a.m.—it also includes $1.3 billion in property tax relief for homeowners.  WTWO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has strongly opposed Union Health’s merger of Terre Haute Regional Hospital, warning that the consolidation may create a regional monopoly that could raise healthcare costs & limit patient access. The state review is underway, and the Indiana Department of Health will hold a town hall on May 1 at Ivy Tech campus to discuss the proposal.  WTWO
