COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Lotus Center opened at 4 p.m. today at 2720 Elm Street to offer warm overnight refuge for over 100 individuals and their pets as cold weather persists and food donations are needed.  WTHI-TV
  • Indiana American Water offers tips to help residents prevent frozen pipes as sub-zero temperatures set in; they advise wrapping pipes in insulation, opening cabinets to let in warm air, and running a trickle of water + using a hair dryer for thawing when needed.  WTHI-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A house fire on Monday morning at 631 Gilbert Ave left four people homeless after the roof collapsed (three adults and one child), with fire crews reporting no injuries and the Red Cross providing assistance.  WTHI-TV

  • Joink LLC, a Terre Haute-based fiber company, announced major fiber network expansions in Avon and Danville to deliver multi-gigabit speeds + dependable service for residents, students, businesses, and remote workers.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Vigo County School Board approved a resolution on Monday to partner with Vigo County government by forming a five-member oversight committee to guide school operations. The move aims to boost collaborative oversight in local education.  Tribune-Star
  • The Vigo County School Board meets tonight at 6 p.m. in the administration office board room at 501 W. Olive St. — its agenda includes the annual evaluation of Superintendent Chris Himsel, who has led the district since July 1, 2023.  Tribune-Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Experts advise Terre Haute residents to seal leaks, add insulation and have heating systems checked as bone-chilling temperatures are expected; they also recommend changing air filters regularly to boost efficiency.  WTHI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Terre Haute and Mental Health America have opened the Lotus Warming Center at 2750 Elm St for residents in cold weather. The center runs from 4 p.m. to 9 a.m. when conditions (wind chill under five degrees, wet, extra snow, or a cold advisory) are met.  WTHI-TV
  • From Dec. 8 to Dec. 13, the Vigo County Health Department inspected local food establishments. Some locations passed inspection while Meijer and Texas Roadhouse received multiple non-compliance findings that require correction, according to the department.  WTHI-TV
