COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army of Vigo County is facing cold weather challenges with its Red Kettle Campaign—having raised $65,000 since November, it now needs more donations to meet its $140,000 goal by Christmas Eve.  WTHI-TV
  • On Dec. 7, more than 240 Rose-Hulman student volunteers assembled and inspected over 230 bikes at the Sports & Recreation Center for the 27th annual Bikes for Tykes event—benefiting children across 19 local schools and involving students from 37 organizations.  Tribune-Star
  • The Terre Haute Human Relations Commission announced the honorees for 2026 Black History Month banners to celebrate local Black leaders for their community contributions. The annual initiative highlights the lasting impact of these figures on the community & looks ahead to inspiring future generations.  Tribune-Star
  • Catholic Charities Terre Haute invites neighbors to two free Christmas meals on Wednesday, Dec. 17 with lunch served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Fishes and Loaves Soup Kitchen (inside Ryves Youth Center) as they enjoy festive holiday favorites.  Tribune-Star
  • Today in Terre Haute, the annual We Care Telethon raised over $322,000 — organizers described the atmosphere as nearly indescribable.  Tribune-Star
  • Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank will host its monthly Bread & Produce Market from 9 to 11 a.m. Dec. 20 to distribute fresh items and 300 donated Christmas hams to help local families create a festive meal.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Vigo County lawmakers announced that Indiana students can apply for the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship—offering $10,000 per year for up to four academic years—to support teaching careers in the state for at least five years, with applications open until Feb. 28.  WTHI-TV
  • Carlisle Elementary School unveiled a new design and innovation studio yesterday with help from Vincennes University. The studio gives students access to STEM technology and dedicated learning resources as part of a broader effort to improve STEM education in Sullivan County.  WTHI-TV
  • Indiana school officials say the property tax overhaul is straining district budgets, leading to staff cuts and delayed maintenance. A statewide survey from Oct. 22 (by the Indiana Coalition for Public Education) shows most districts expect a drop in funding for essential services.  WTHI-TV
  • Indiana lawmakers held a Senate Education Committee hearing to review Senate Bill 78, which would ban cellphones during the school day by requiring secure storage or no devices at all—legislators anticipate a full chamber vote in early January.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Indiana utility customer advocacy groups released proposals on Tuesday that call for energy bill relief measures, including discounts and a summertime shutoff ban (and oversight changes) to make energy more affordable for residential and small-business ratepayers.  Tribune-Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Vigo County Health Department inspected several food establishments—from local favorites to new venues—between Dec. 1 and Dec. 6, 2025, finding numerous issues with food storage and sanitation. New ownership operations were cleared to open or operate once improvements are confirmed.  WTHI-TV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Indiana State University is preparing to sell or transfer the University Apartments property on Third Street — between Crawford and Farrington — after closing it as student housing effective for the 2026-27 academic year.  Tribune-Star
