  • On Tuesday, celebrity baggers including media figures+elected officials+law enforcement+business owners packed groceries and holiday treats at Baesler's Market to raise money for Miracle on 7th Street.  Tribune-Star

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Vigo County Area Planning Commission recommended a new development that could bring a Target to the east side of Terre Haute. Gibson Development applied for land along State Road 46 (next to Sycamore Terrace Apartments) and must finish a plat map in 90 days.  WTHI-TV
  • Some local businesses in Terre Haute working with Amazon Hub reported a reduction in their payment rate from ($2.50 to $1.70 per package) during the busy holiday season; Amazon acknowledged the clerical error and is beginning a new verification process to address the issue.  WTHI-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Terre Haute native Harrison Whitaker won his 11th straight victory on Tuesday on 'Jeopardy!' — he earned $19,700 in that episode, which boosted his total winnings to $309,000.  Tribune-Star
  • Center Stage Community Theatre—well-known for its creative productions—will present a modern twist on Jane Austen's classic Pride and Prejudice through December.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana State University has launched a new Bachelor of Arts in Sport Communication (approved by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education) that brings together courses from the Communication and Sport Management programs; enrollment is open for students aiming for careers in sports broadcasting, reporting, and social media management.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Sullivan face detours as Buck Creek Bridge on West Wolfe Street closed yesterday for a replacement that will last about three months—officials advise using Frakes or West Washington Street even though residents warn of heavy school bus traffic on Frakes.  WTHI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cigarette use in Indiana dropped 40% in the first three months after a new tax was implemented — enrollment in quit programs also increased, the Indiana Department of Health said.  Tribune-Star
  • After a $2-per-pack tax hike that took effect July 1, Indiana saw cigarette consumption drop 40% and enrollment in the Quit Now Indiana program rise 38% during the first three months—actions taken to reduce tobacco use and support public health. Lawmakers also raised taxes on electronic cigarettes and other tobacco products to discourage switching brands.  WTHI-TV
