COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Indiana State University College of Arts and Sciences will host a free panel on food insecurity Monday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Cunningham Memorial Library’s Events Center, open to all community members.  Tribune-Star
  • Volunteer Bill Youman, in his 80s — who often rang his bell from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in past years — will help the Salvation Army Red Kettle drive by ringing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and again from 5 to 7 p.m. in front of Hobby Lobby.  Tribune-Star
  • Elite Smiles Dental hosted its 'Smiles for Freedom' event that gave free dental care to local veterans this year—providing needed services during appointments; the program has run for three years and is expected to continue.  WTHI-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Twelve years ago, Lexi Ryan left her college English job to write novels full-time in Terre Haute, which raised doubts about her ability to succeed as an author. Mark Bennett’s article explains her journey & growing success as a best-selling writer.  Tribune-Star
  • Brian Mundell has expanded the Veterans Memorial Museum with a new Vietnam Memorial Room that honors Vietnam War veterans—featuring items such as a pot brought home by veteran Dave Runyan and a shelter built by Jerome Trierweiler.   • U.S. Air Force veteran Jim Colligan flew around 80 missions as a navigator and bombardier on a B-52 during the Vietnam War—he was pictured at the Veterans Memorial Museum of Terre Haute on Oct. 31.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana Department of Education data shows that the Vigo County School Corp retained (26) third-grade students who did not meet reading standards and must repeat the grade next school year.  Tribune-Star
  • College Goal Sunday will take place Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Ivy Tech Community College and Vincennes University—offering free help to fill out the FAFSA for students and families.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • With the continuing government shutdown, Terre Haute Catholic Charities has assisted unpaid federal workers and people missing SNAP benefits—helping them meet basic needs amid ongoing uncertainty.  Tribune-Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Indiana Department of Health nears a deadline to decide on the proposed merger between Union Health and Regional Hospital — the decision is expected by Sunday. The department spent 120 days reviewing the merger, weighing improved healthcare access and quality against concerns over price increases.  WTHI-TV
  • Horizon Health in Paris completed a two-year emergency department renovation funded by a $4M donation; the updated ER now has 13 exam rooms + a new room for behavioral health + a mural by Terre Haute artist Emily Bennett.  WTHI-TV
