COMMUNITY NEWS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the US Department of Energy announced a $1.5B loan to Wabash Valley Resources to convert an abandoned coal plant in West Terre Haute into a fertilizer facility that will produce 500,000 metric tons of anhydrous ammonia per year. WVR will repay the federal loan by sequestering carbon dioxide underground—eliminating a traditional smoke stack while about 40% of the carbon capture infrastructure is complete.  WTHI-TV
  • Mark Bennett explained that many people talk about federal aid in ways that do not match study data—research from Ball State Center shows that counties like Vigo, Vermillion, and Sullivan had high rates of federal transfer payments. His analysis suggests perceptions differ from the reality of programs such as SNAP, Social Security, and Medicaid.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lynsey Dowell, a teaching assistant at Rio Grande Elementary in her third year, is taking part in a new teacher apprenticeship program that partners Ivy Tech with local Vigo schools. She reads with third graders on Thursday to build classroom skills for her future as a teacher.  Tribune-Star
