COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Vigo County fire departments are raising funds to build a memorial statue that will honor fallen firefighters, with a design featuring a bronze firefighter kneeling in front of a black granite wall with red backlights—set to be placed at Memorial Park near Memorial Stadium. Officials say reaching a $35k donation goal will trigger matching grants and move the project forward, with installation planned for 2027.  WTHI-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Ouabache Land Conservancy invites the public to a candle-lit Halloween Night Hike & Campfire at John O. Whitaker Woods Nature Preserve (3751 W. County Rd. 950 N., Brazil) on Oct. 25th from 7 to 9 p.m. Families are encouraged to wear costumes and bring lawn chairs and flashlights for this free event.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Vigo County School Corp encourages families affected by the ongoing government shutdown to apply for free or reduced-price meals to ensure students receive lunch support. Families who lost income can reapply at any time—helping students continue to get nutritious meals.  Tribune-Star
  • Indiana State University will reopen Hines and Jones Halls next fall to offer both double and single rooms that remain open during breaks, responding to student demand for more on-campus housing — University Apartments will not be available for student housing in fall 2026 or spring 2027.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The ongoing government shutdown has strained local families as they risk losing SNAP benefits and income and has increased the demand at food banks—Catholic Charities and local schools have stepped up to provide food and support now and if the shutdown continues into November.  WTHI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Indiana poultry farms are on alert as migrating birds may spread highly pathogenic avian influenza that mainly affects birds and rarely touches farm workers — tests confirm the food supply remains safe and measures are in place to contain the virus.  WTHI-TV
  • Kerrie Wilson, a 56-year-old breast cancer survivor who credits a routine mammogram at Union Health with saving her life, urges all women to get regular mammograms. Wilson works part-time at Union Health’s Convenient Care on South Sixth Street and full-time at Ambucare Clinic and believes her medical background led her to seek early screening.  Tribune-Star
