COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department will host its annual Haunted Halloween Happenings at Deming Park from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday — all ages are welcome but parental discretion is advised.  Tribune-Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Terre Haute is hosting its annual Haunted Haute event on October 24, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.—families can enjoy trick-or-treat booths along Wabash Avenue from 5th to 9th Street, food trucks, a photo booth and a dance party sponsored by local organizations.  WTHI-TV
  • The Community Theater of Terre Haute unveiled a new flashy sign that can now be updated directly from a computer—replacing the need for a volunteer to climb a ladder. Donations funded the upgrade, which comes ahead of the theater's 100th anniversary next year.  WTHI-TV
  • Indiana State University will host its 59th Annual Contemporary Music Festival from Wednesday through Friday and will feature guest composer Damien Geter—an alumnus honored with the Library of Virginia’s top award who blends classical music with influences from the Black diaspora.  Tribune-Star
  • Lee Creed, a 58-year-old Parke County native — who works alone repairing, leveling and restoring headstones — worked on a hot Saturday morning at Bound Cemetery. He has dedicated his free time to preserving local history in neglected graveyards.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Terre Haute Children’s Museum is hosting a Celebration of Space Exploration Day on Saturday that will privately include a live NASA ARISS contact with local students speaking to astronaut Jonny Kim—while the Gibson-Allen Memorial Planetarium at 3737 S. Seventh St. offers a public livestream starting at 8:30 a.m.  Tribune-Star
  • The Indiana Department of Education submitted a federal waiver request to ease certain rules under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to reduce red tape and boost student success—Gov. Mike Braun and Secretary Katie Jenner welcomed the move, noting the U.S. Department of Education will respond within 120 days and changes could start in the 2026–2027 school year if approved.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Vigo County School Board adopted a $180 million overall 2026 budget on Monday — now under review by the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance. The board also recommended a few adjustments from prior presentations.  Tribune-Star
  • Indiana drivers will see a slight gas tax cut next month — the tax will drop from 18 cents to 16.7 cents per gallon as announced by the Indiana Department of Revenue. Gas prices dropped by 20 cents last month, affecting how the tax is adjusted monthly.  WTHI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • National Drug Take Back Day is set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Wabash Valley to safely dispose of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs—police say this effort helps prevent abuse and accidental poisonings.  WTHI-TV
