COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Terre Haute is hosting Trick-or-Treating on October 30 and 31 with festivities ending at 9:00 p.m. each night & under Special Ordinance No. 67, 1980 residents may choose to join on one or both nights.  WTHI-TV
  • Firefighters mark 100 years of Fire Prevention Week by hosting events that teach children about fire safety in non-emergency settings (showing how the gear works). The program honors the past and aims to secure the future (promoting community preparedness).  Tribune-Star
  • A new challenge invites walkers and runners to enjoy parks in the Wabash Valley. Participants receive a hoodie and a finisher's medal — they must complete six of the eight courses offered, and the event starts this Saturday and runs through December 13 as a partnership of the Wabash Valley Road Runners, the City of Terre Haute, and Vigo County Parks Department.  WTHI-TV

  • Parlor Doughnuts, a craft doughnut and coffee shop in Towne South Plaza, will hold its grand opening Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.—it offers vegan, gluten-friendly and keto-friendly baked goods along with artisan breakfast items and specialty coffee beverages.  Tribune-Star

  • Mark Bennett leads a Brazil-based effort to bring professional entertainment to rural Hoosiers—music fans lined the block outside the Walnut Theatre in downtown Brazil last Saturday night as the initiative gained local support.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana education officials unveiled major updates to the proposed school accountability system on Wednesday—adding new reading and back on track measures to replace the old A-F grading model. The department must deliver a final plan by Dec. 31 under state law that aligns with the Indiana GPS framework.  Tribune-Star
  • Indiana State University (ISU) provost Chris Olsen is set to leave and will serve as the next president of Northern Michigan University.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Indiana drivers are urged by the Indiana DOT and State Police to follow the move over law this Saturday as part of National Move Over Day—this law now requires drivers to yield to all stationary vehicles with flashing lights. AAA reported 14 fatalities in Indiana and over 400 nationwide in 2023 from incidents involving stopped vehicles.  WTHI-TV
  • A federal judge on Tuesday rejected Indiana’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit challenging a ban on student IDs for voting+ the decision means the case will continue in court.  Tribune-Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Vigo County Board of Health approved its 2026 meeting dates and said goodbye to board member Dr. Jennifer Todd, who is moving to Florida. The board set meetings for Jan. 21, April 15, July 15 and Oct. 21 with January and July sessions held at the Vigo County Annex council chambers plus April and October sessions in the commissioners' conference room, and an appointee from Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun's office will fill the vacancy.  Tribune-Star
