COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thrive Together is launched by Thrive West Central—partnered with First Baptist Church Brazil—to help combat loneliness by offering practical resources in a seven-county region. Community Development Director Kristi Whitacre developed the program using a Lilly Endowment grant and it will remove participation barriers while tracking its impact.  Tribune-Star
  • Parke County will soon begin the Covered Bridge Festival with officials expecting near one million visitors over a 10-day period. Officials urged drivers to prepare for heavier traffic—parking is available on streets and in designated lots, though many vendors will only accept cash and cell service may be limited.  WTHI-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Birdie's Gifts + Stuff will open its doors tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 15 S. Seventh St. in downtown Terre Haute to offer thoughtful gifts, unique finds and locally made treasures.  Tribune-Star
  • Local Terre Haute businesses joined the ISU Homecoming contest by showcasing traditional window designs, and RJL Solutions won an athletics package for its employees—highlighting community support in the celebration.  WTHI-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • ZZ Top is playing today at The Mill in Terre Haute with original drummer Frank Beard returning after a few weeks' absence—he will join guitarist Billy Gibbons and bassist Elwood Francis who replaced the late Dusty Hill.  Tribune-Star
  • Sisters of Providence are hosting Forest Meditations on Oct 25 on the St. Joseph’s Nature Trail at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods — the event begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m.  Tribune-Star

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Madison County farmers are worried about soybean prices as the fall harvest exceeds expectations and China stopped buying U.S. soybeans—China had purchased $12.6 billion worth of soybeans in 2024 but made no purchases since April due to new U.S. tariffs. The reduced demand may lower crop values for local farmers.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana State University's Homecoming will feature new attractions at the Alumni Tailgate, including a bounce house, carnival rides— and a virtual trivia game— to connect alumni, students, and the Terre Haute community. Organizers said that preparations continue as they ready a lively weekend that will bolster ties with nearby counties.  WTHI-TV
  • Indiana State University is celebrating the groundbreaking of the National Pan-Hellenic Council Plaza today—an event honoring historically Black Greek-letter fraternities and sororities as seen in an artist’s rendering.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Indiana Department of Natural Resources announced today that reserved hunt applications are available online at GoOutdoorsIN.com for certain areas in Terre Haute.  Tribune-Star
  • At Thursday evening's meeting at City Hall, the Terre Haute City Council finished voting on the 2026 budget—postponing votes on salary ordinances for Street and Transit employees pending revisions.  Tribune-Star
  • Terre Haute City Planner Maitri Desai presented the Safe Streets Terre Haute Safety Action Plan at an open house and then to the City Council on Thursday, sharing key study results. Transportation Planner Peter Williams also joined the presentations+ offered further guidance on the project.  Tribune-Star
  • The Indiana Department of Transportation said contractors closed lanes on I-70 in Vigo County—between Exit 7 at U.S. 41 and Exit 11 at U.S. 40/Indiana 46/Indiana 641—to repair a damaged guardrail beginning Thursday evening. The closures are scheduled to run overnight between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.  Tribune-Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Maple Center Integrative Health Nonprofit invites the public to its annual fundraiser event—Your Toolkit for Healthy Living—set for November 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Vigo County History Center in Terre Haute. A frost advisory for today warned that temperatures dropped to 34 and threatened sensitive outdoor plants between 2 a.m. and 9 a.m.  Tribune-Star
