  • The Strawberry Hill Cannoneers held their 64th annual muster, a tradition begun in 1960 when attorney Lenhardt Bauer invited nearly 60 friends to 'report for duty' at his home at 1504 S. Sixth St.—the group marched from Washington Street to his house to mark the change from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.  Tribune-Star

  • Vigo County Public Library has planned Halloween events in October and a contest on book banning during National Banned Books Week from Oct. 5 to Oct. 11—this year the theme is 'Censorship is so 1984' inspired by George Orwell's novel.  Tribune-Star

  • As the government shutdown continues, local banks like Farmers Bank are providing flexible assistance to help Hoosiers manage their finances—many institutions are allocating resources to ease uncertainty.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is leading a multi-institutional project funded by the National Science Foundation to boost undergraduate research in engineering—enhancing mentorship opportunities for students. It will receive $126,043 from a $699,701 award that will be shared with five institutions over the next three years.  Tribune-Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Elite Smiles Dental will host its annual Smiles for Freedom event at 8 a.m. on November 7 at 1800 S. Third St.—the event will offer free dental services including cleanings, exams and fillings to local veterans.  Tribune-Star
