COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday night, Andy Volkl—Saturn Petcare's chief operating officer—danced the Viennese Waltz with partner Luna Rogers at Hulman Center and won top honors for raising the most funds at CASY's annual Dancing with the Terre Haute Stars fundraiser. His win boosted the charity event and supported local community efforts.  Tribune-Star
  • Terre Haute’s Patricia Etling, who helped form Catholic Charities with her late husband in 1973, will be named the Archdiocese of Indianapolis 2026 Legacy Honoree—recognizing her longtime support for Catholic education and charitable outreach across 20 counties.  Tribune-Star
  • A new kayak station opened at Fairbanks Park today on the banks of the Wabash River (donated by the Terre Haute Area Association of Realtors). The parks department said the station will encourage more local river adventures (officials expect increased use).  WTHI-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Due to dry weather increasing fire risk, multiple counties and fire departments in the Wabash Valley imposed burn bans—covering regions in Illinois such as Clay, Coles, Crawford, and Lawrence counties as well as Fountain, Parke, and Vermillion counties in Indiana.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The federal government shutdown interrupted telehealth and at-home care services for Hoosier Medicare patients, sparking confusion and concern that some may delay needed care—officials are watching the situation closely.  Tribune-Star
  • The ACLU of Indiana is suing Indiana State University after the university cut federal work-study funds for the Pride Center following DOJ guidance—this change forced the center to cover student wages out of its own budget and the lawsuit asks a federal court to restore funding.  WTHI-TV
  • Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun will host the next Mingle with the Mayor session on Oct. 14 from 3 to 4 p.m. at Grand Traverse Pie Company, 75 N. Third St.—the event lets residents discuss local community issues with him.  Tribune-Star
