COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Terre Haute’s Human Relations Commission is inviting community members to nominate local trailblazers for downtown Black History Month street banners—nominations close Oct. 29.  Tribune-Star
  • Catholic Charities Terre Haute will open registration for its annual Christmas Store that offers holiday gifts and essentials to families in west central Indiana from October 27 to October 31 at 1440 Locust Street — the program aims to help children and families in need this holiday season.  WTHI-TV
  • While visitors gather downtown for Haunted Haute on Oct. 24, Vigo County Public Library will hand out books and treats for readers — library staff will read selected stories from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  Tribune-Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Indiana Bat Festival celebrated its 20th year on Saturday at Indiana State University's Science Building and Dobbs Park with a live bat presentation—tables explained how bats live and help the environment.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday the Vigo County School Board approved a $3.9 million grant — it will let the district purchase 14 electric school buses to replace diesel models. The grant is provided through the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s heavy duty bus program.  Tribune-Star
  • Junior Achievement in Wabash Valley is planning its third annual Halloween Bowlathon fundraiser, which will be presented by the Terre Haute Casino Resort on Oct. 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Terre Haute Bowling Center — the event will gather local businesses and community partners to help young people succeed.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Mike Braun tells News 10 that he will work to ensure data centers pay their fair share for rising energy and water costs—Indiana is experiencing a boom in these centers driven by demand for AI and cloud services, although some residents worry about increased consumption.  WTHI-TV
  • Later next month, Vigo County Commissioners will ask the Council to create and fund an independent oversight committee to review the proposed Vigo County School Corp facility plans — the request will be made at a meeting at 5 p.m. Oct. 29.  Tribune-Star
  • A community open house to review Terre Haute's Safe Street initiative is set for Oct. 9 from 5 to 6 p.m. at City Hall’s Board of Public Works and Safety Conference Room—its $200,000 DOT grant funds data-driven strategies to reduce fatal and serious injuries for drivers, bikers, walkers, and transit riders.  Tribune-Star
  • Indivisible Wabash Valley is organizing another 'No Kings' rally Oct. 18 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Vigo County Courthouse — the event follows previous demonstrations.  Tribune-Star
  • Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun said he will coordinate the warming centers' operations this winter by setting clear guidelines for opening triggers, operating hours, accepted items and donation capacity+ he will form a task force to combat homelessness later.  Tribune-Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Council on Domestic Abuse, Inc. (CODA) will host community events this October to raise awareness about domestic violence and provide prevention tools. The events will support survivors, families and friends and welcome anyone wanting to help end abuse.  Tribune-Star
