COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Kiwanis of Terre Haute awarded its annual Hand Clasp Award today to local citizen John P. Newton for his 40 years of service at Indiana State University and his work to improve the Wabash Valley. Newton (who served as associate director of student affairs and vice president of the ISU Foundation) was honored for his longstanding commitment to the community.  Tribune-Star
  • Saint Benedict Catholic Church is hosting a block party downtown today from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Families can enjoy live music, food trucks & a mural project for kids while adults pay a $5 fee.  WTHI-TV
  • South Vigo High School held its annual welding cookout on Friday, and the event grew over the years by including fundraisers that featured grilled hamburgers and hotdogs—complete with a dunking booth, student band, games, henna tattoos and a car show.  Tribune-Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Men of Note Band will perform a free concert at Fairbanks Park at 5 p.m. today—offering a lineup that differs from their past two weeks. The group will play big-band swing tunes with Bill Fulwilers' unique arrangements.  Tribune-Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Nonprofit environmental advocacy organization reTHink transformed a former lawn mower repair shop with a cracked floor into a modern conference space at its headquarters — 1344 S. 13th St that now hosts both in-person and virtual meetings with new flooring, a kitchen, fresh paint, electrical upgrades and audio-visual technology.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Indiana lawmakers did not make any recommendations on a medical debt report after reviewing a failed bill that would have stopped hospitals and debt collectors from repossessing homes and garnishing wages— the committee chair said more data on charity care is needed as over 800,000 Hoosiers report medical debt each year.  WTHI-TV
  • Elected, business, and nonprofit leaders from five counties met on Friday in Clay City at a regional summit hosted by the West Central Indiana Partnership—where they agreed on common principles to market the region and spur growth.  Tribune-Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Union Health has increased its sports medicine team by hiring more orthopedic surgeons and sports care experts—its athletic trainers now cover sporting events in the Wabash Valley and began a partnership with Indiana State University on July 1.  Tribune-Star
  • More than 700 Hoosiers gather today at Memorial Stadium for Walk to End Alzheimer’s.  Tribune-Star

  • Mark Bennett recalled that his football team at Honey Creek Junior High got a boost when a new teammate named Malcolm arrived with a North Carolina accent—sparking hopes for the town’s best sports days ahead.  Tribune-Star
