COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Best Friends Animal Society said that over 80% of shelter pets were saved in 2024 but many shelters still are crowded. At the Terre Haute Humane Society — now full during Indiana Loves Shelter Pets week — leaders stressed that more adoptions can help Indiana move toward becoming a no-kill state.  WTHI-TV
  • The Mill in collaboration with Terre Haute Children’s Museum is hosting the 4th annual Touch-a-Truck event on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event lets children climb into trucks, emergency vehicles and construction vehicles to learn about the machines that serve the community.  Tribune-Star
  • Baesler’s Market and Charlie’s Pub & Grub have teamed up to support Miracle on 7th Street by offering a special hamburger called The Local Legend Tweety Burger throughout September; the burger is made with a blend of Angus beef and filet mignon and topped with Boar’s Head cheese, fried onions and a steak sauce from George Baesler.  Tribune-Star

  • After 45 years of service, Rick Mullininx—president and COO of Great Dane—will retire on Dec. 31, 2026. He began his career as an intern and rose through nearly every level of the company.  Tribune-Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra will open its 100th season on Saturday with a concert that introduces new music director Roger Kalia. Kalia said he is excited to meet the community and share his musical vision at the event.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Indiana's Department of Transportation requested a waiver to bypass diverse contractor rules after a federal case led to a preliminary injunction, and the state's attorney general called the rules unconstitutional. The request was filed with the U.S.-DOT late last month in response to a challenge by a disgruntled subcontractor.  Tribune-Star
  • INDOT will hold hiring events for seasonal snow plow drivers—one event at Terre Haute on September 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and another at Bloomington on October 7 from 1 to 5 p.m.—as it prepares for winter work starting in November through early April. Applicants will earn $21 an hour for full-time work and $25 an hour for on-call roles and must have a valid CDL.  WTHI-TV
  • The Terre Haute Parks Department and Recreation board received an update that design for Deming Park pool renovation was 80% complete+ RATIO Architects provided an overview that mixed ideas from spring.  Tribune-Star
