COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Vigo County Commissioners approved a zoning request for a new Indian event and community center in Terre Haute after Dr. Vuppala Reeddy outlined the need for a dedicated space for local celebrations+ the privately funded project will break ground later this year and is expected to be completed by fall.   WTHI-TV
  • Food Truck Friday will be held this Friday at the Terre Haute City Hall Parking lot at 17 Harding Avenue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Maggie & Moe's Coffee will serve breakfast from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. — another chance to enjoy food trucks is planned on September 19 if you miss this event.  WTHI-TV
  • Hamilton Center will host its 11th annual Diversity Walk on Aug. 23 — a free event in downtown Terre Haute that invites people of all races, ages, and abilities — to celebrate diversity and inclusion.  Tribune-Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Terre Haute Children’s Museum will host Radio-Activity Day on Aug 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.—the event partners with the Wabash Valley Amateur Radio Association to let families try making a radio connection with someone across the globe.  Tribune-Star
  • Stevie Rector, a Terre Haute author, released her first book inspired by an attempted robbery in 2013. The novel mixes fantasy, mythology, and vengeance to give strength to survivors — and she is working on her second novel set for release next fall.  WTHI-TV
  • Three local artists—Rod Bradfield, Anna Lee Chalos-McAleese and George McAleese—will be featured in the 101st Hoosier Art Salon exhibition at the Indiana State Museum from Aug 23 through Oct 26; the show is considered the state’s top juried art exhibition of Indiana works.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Results from the 2024-25 IREAD assessment by the state Department of Education showed that third grade literacy rates jumped nearly five percentage points—marking the fourth consecutive year of improvement.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Terre Haute now controls 19 parcels at 19th and Beech Streets from the former Columbian Enameling site after the EPA cleaned up asbestos debris—officials said the remaining parcels will be transferred as paperwork is completed and the city will begin redeveloping the area.  WTHI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Union Health announced that Dr. Anil Yadav will soon serve Parke and Vermillion counties and bring his cardiology expertise to the region. He earned his undergraduate degree and medical doctorate from the University of Western Ontario — completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Toronto and his cardiology fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.  Tribune-Star
