COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ K-9 units from the Terre Haute Police Department traveled to Peru—where Lt. Justin Sears, an experienced handler, judged events at the annual Vohne Liche K-9 Olympics held on Aug 12th. WTHI-TV
- ➤ WIN Energy REMC announced it is launching WIN for the Community to support local nonprofit organizations in rural Clay, Gibson, Greene, Knox, Pike, Posey, Sullivan and Vigo counties with volunteer help for projects such as painting and landscaping. Non-political organizations will be able to request hands-on help from the WIN Energy REMC team. Tribune-Star
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ The Terre Haute Convention Center has won the Prime Site Award from Facilities and Destinations magazine for the fourth year in a row—this honor shows its top status for meetings and events. Later this year the center will be featured in the SuperBook issue that spotlights outstanding venues. WTHI-TV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At Ouabache Elementary, school staff greeted students on their first day back with a blue carpet Hollywood style welcome—complete with high-fives, hugs, and kind words—and many students felt excited to reconnect while others were nervous until reassured by teachers. Tribune-Star
- ➤ Indiana State University alumna and faculty member Jennifer Mullen has pledged $30,000 to create an endowed scholarship for the Scott College of Business to help students with limited financial support — the scholarship will assist students in completing their degrees. Tribune-Star
- ➤ Over the summer, Vigo County Schools upgraded classroom furniture, cafeteria tables, and lighting systems to create friendlier spaces—students reported positive feedback on the changes. WTHI-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Mike Braun said on Tuesday that he and GOP leaders are considering calling a special session to redraw the congressional map early pending Texas's redistricting outcome + his decision may change based on what happens in Texas. Tribune-Star
- ➤ At Tuesday’s meeting, Hamilton Center counsel Suzanne Overholt told the Vigo County Council that the center is in compliance with state budget law H.B. 1001 by lowering a non-clinical employee’s pay to below $400,000—ensuring funds are not used improperly. Council President David Thompson stated that the employee is CEO Melvin Burks, who received over $1 million last year. Tribune-Star
