- ➤ Terre Haute firefighter Nathan Huyck, off duty on Saturday afternoon, heard his neighbor shouting and rushed to help as she was giving birth in her front yard. He coached her to push as the newborn, who was born blue, needed urgent care before firefighters and an ambulance took the infant to a local hospital. WTHI-TV
- ➤ CASA will host an Elks Fish Fry for CASA at 2125 N. 25th St. (4 to 8 p.m. Saturday) offering dine-in and drive-through meals (adult meals are $13 and children's are $10) along with raffles, a beer garden and live headliner music by Kingsly T from 4:30 to 6:30. Tribune-Star
- ➤ The Vigo County Public Library will host an event on Thursday, August 14 from 3 to 6 p.m. at its Main Library’s Lifelong Learning Center—attendees can meet new Executive Director Jordan Orwig who succeeded Kristi Howe. WTHI-TV

- ➤ Popular mall store Claire's filed for bankruptcy court permission to sell nearly 700 locations nationwide and will close dozens of Indiana stores. The chain's restructuring plan includes the Haute City Center location in Terre Haute—aiming to streamline its operations. WTHI-TV
- ➤ A new McDonald's opened on Jessica Drive in front of Menards on the south side of Vigo County. The restaurant welcomes customers while owners will soon share details on a planned grand opening. WTHI-TV

- ➤ Last week, the United Association of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 157 welcomed nearly 200 new apprentices in a swearing-in ceremony that started their careers in vital skilled trades for Indiana’s infrastructure. The union, which serves 22 counties, has spent 129 years training workers & driving regional growth. Tribune-Star

- ➤ The Greater Terre Haute NAACP Branch held the first forum on a carbon capture pilot project affecting Vigo and Vermillion counties on July 21 and will host the second forum at the Vigo County Public Library on Aug 18. Tribune-Star
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Terre Haute City Engineer Marcus Maurer appeared before the City Council on Thursday to seek amendments to several city codes and a transfer of funds to pay for three electric vehicles — the vehicles will eventually be reimbursed by the federal government. He had earlier tried to amend the Property Maintenance Code to stop buildings from reaching condemnation status. Tribune-Star

- ➤ Thrive West Central and the Sisters of Providence will offer dementia awareness training sessions in September based on Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care, with award-winning nurse Beth Collins and Dementia Outreach specialist Amy Schorr leading the training — care partners, family members and friends will have respite care available.
