COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Advocates and experts said that the federal cut in SNAP funding will worsen food insecurity in Terre Haute — local charities are expected to face greater strain in distributing food.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday, 116 golfers played at Rea Park in the 33rd annual 'Fore' the Kids Golf Scramble — an event organized by the Vigo County Education Foundation that charged a $500 fee per team. The funds raised will help pay for tutoring, summer programs, and classroom supplies.  WTWO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jordan Orwig is named the new executive director of the Vigo County Public Library, stepping into the role immediately after serving as interim director—he succeeds Kristi Howe, who left in May after over a decade of service; the library will host an open house on August 14 for the community to meet him.  WTHI-TV
  • The Vigo County Public Library Board has named Jordan Orwig—who previously served as interim director—as its new executive director effective immediately; he brings experience from managing multiple departments and a history museum at Sullivan County Public Library to guide ongoing projects. This change is meant to further improve library services and meet community needs.  WTWO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Terre Haute firefighters remind residents to drink water and take regular breaks during the ongoing high heat — they warn that caffeinated or alcoholic drinks may speed dehydration. Capt. Nick Arnold detailed early signs of heat sickness such as cramps and dizziness and urged anyone with severe symptoms to seek help immediately.  WTHI-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Vigo County school anglers will compete in a fishing tournament at Sullivan Park and Lake on Sunday starting at 7 a.m., with the weigh-in at 2 p.m. Twenty-one teams from North, South and West schools will race in the seventh annual event — all fish caught will be released back into the lake after weighing.  WTHI-TV
