- ➤ Covered with Love Diaper Bank will celebrate 10 years by hosting a banquet at the Terre Haute Convention Center on September 20—tickets are on sale and all proceeds benefit the organization that has distributed nearly half a million diapers since 2015. WTWO
- ➤ The Indiana Community Action Poverty Institute is offering two free online workshops to help community members learn their rights and step-by-step strategies for handling medical debt—those with questions about medical bills are encouraged to attend. Tribune-Star
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Vigo County jury convicted Jesse Hess, 38, on Thursday on four charges including murder, robbery causing serious injury, aggravated battery and battery with a deadly weapon in connection with the August 2020 beating and robbery death of a Terre Haute man at his home and he was acquitted of an armed robbery charge. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ In June, Indiana saw the largest drop in the unemployment rate in the nation with a 0.6 percentage point decrease from June 2024 — the state added 21,114 workers to its workforce now totaling 3,456,819. WTWO
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mayor Brandon Sakbun said he will explore a local nonprofit grant program to help keep the 14th and Chestnut Community Center open after a $372,000 federal grant loss may force its closure in September. He directed his team to assess the impact of federal and state funding cuts and will request gaming revenue funds from City Council in 2026—urging faith-based, private, and philanthropic groups to support the center. - ➤ Beginning on or after Wednesday, the Indiana Department of Transportation will temporarily close Indiana 159 in Blackhawk to replace a culvert between Finer Street and All Street. Drivers should use the detour via Indiana 46 — Indiana 59 — Indiana 246 as work is expected to last about one day and is weather dependent. Tribune-Star
