COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 14th and Chestnut Community Center in Terre Haute faces closure after its federal grant of $372,000 a year was halted due to funding cuts. The center, which supported up to 70 children daily with after-school care and meals, is asking locals to contact legislators — sharing their personal stories to help keep its doors open.  WTWO

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday at about 2:25 p.m., a motor vehicle crash at U.S. 41 and Allendale Lane killed one person and injured another—according to the Vigo County Sheriff's Office.  Tribune-Star

CRIME NEWS

  • Indiana State Police chased a driver who refused a traffic stop in Vermillion County — the pursuit reached 95 mph before the driver stopped near a home in Montezuma and was taken into custody and sent to Vermillion County Jail.  WTWO
  • During an early morning traffic stop just before 1 a.m. on State Road 67 between Bruceville and Bicknell, a Knox County deputy stopped Adam Decoursey (previously arrested for cocaine possession in May) after a K-9 alerted officers to drugs in his car, leading them to find 24.3 grams of crack cocaine, a red hose with a glass pipe showing burnt residue, and nearly $6,500 in cash used as evidence before he was released on bail.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Terre Haute Fire Department is promoting the Close Before You Doze initiative that urges residents to close their bedroom door before bed to slow the spread of fire and smoke. Captain Nick Arnold said that closing the door can help keep the room cooler — giving firefighters extra time to rescue occupants in a fire.  WTWO
  • Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales announced that Hoosiers now get free Experian AutoCheck vehicle history reports allowing up to five free checks per year. The service was created by his Auto Dealer Services Division & Experian to help consumers make informed decisions when buying used vehicles.  WTWO
  • The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with Quality 360 Healthcare to start a jail recovery treatment program today using a state grant from the Indiana Sheriff’s Association to help inmates with mental health issues. Sheriff Jason Bobbitt said the program has been in planning for over a year and will lead to future community housing support once inmates complete their assessments.  WTWO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Veteran Health Indiana will host a Veterans Benefits and Resource Fair at the Terre Haute VA Clinic — located at 5080 Bill Farr Drive — on July 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Representatives from Veteran Health Indiana, the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs, and County Veteran Service Officers will answer questions on health care, benefits, toxic exposure screenings, and enrollment while advising Veterans to bring a copy of their DD-214.  WTWO
