- ➤ Verizon Wireless stores in Terre Haute will give away hundreds of free backpacks at 1 p.m. on July 27 at Round Room’s 13th annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway—designed to ease the financial burden for families heading into the school year. Tribune-Star
- ➤ A local teen is hosting an event this weekend — July 19 — to raise money for a group that helps feed children in need. 18-year-old Sam Fathauer organized the first-ever Sullivan Fun Run for a Cause and discussed his plans on WTWO Today. WTWO
- ➤ Covered with Love Diaper Bank is celebrating 10 years of providing diapers and baby hygiene supplies to families across the Wabash Valley. A banquet will be held on Sept. 20 at the Terre Haute Convention Center — during National Diaper Need Awareness Week from Sept. 15 to 21. Tribune-Star
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A fatal crash on U.S. 41 near Allendale killed one person and closed the northbound lanes at Carlisle Road for an extended period, according to the Vigo County Sheriff's Office. Tribune-Star
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Owen Valley High School students raised nearly $45,000 to restore McCormick's Creek State Park after a tornado damaged the campground and trails in March 2023. They worked with local groups and Indiana DNR, and construction on a new bridge will start soon—improving park access—so visitors can safely use the park again. WTHI-TV
- ➤ Officials from the EPA, IDEM, and the city met Tuesday to update on the cleanup at 19th and Beech where crews removed toxic scrap metal and asbestos; a $500,000 brownfield assessment grant will help plan new housing or green space—Mayor Brandon Sakbun said all options will be considered. - ➤ Union Health began screening all patients for measles on Monday—after a case was confirmed in nearby Putnam County—and the process asks patients about symptoms and exposure at every Union Health facility. This step is meant to help catch the virus early and protect the community. WTWO
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Thrive West Central held a ribbon cutting Tuesday morning at Gerstmeyer High on the former Terre Haute Boys and Girls Club site, marking the start of a housing project with 10 new 1,200-square-foot homes featuring three bedrooms and three bathrooms on the corner of North 13th Street and 3rd Avenue. The project is part of the Homes for the Future program funded by city ARPA funds and will eventually include 54 houses on a 9-acre property—preserving local history with donated school items and street dedications to community leaders.
