- ➤ U-Haul is offering 30 free days of self-storage and U-Box container use at six centers in central Illinois and Terre Haute to help those affected by Wednesday’s storms—high winds caused property damage and power outages in the area. WTWO
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Layla Ellis will start college this fall at Indiana State University on a full-tuition pre-med program from the Rural Health Scholarship. She is the first second-generation recipient of the award and her love for medicine grew from working in her father's clinic + a mission trip to Ecuador. WTWO
- ➤ Excel Center of West Central Indiana will celebrate its first graduation today—nine students will receive high school diplomas at the tuition-free adult charter school that opened last August at The Meadows shopping center. A flood warning covers the Wabash River at Montezuma, with minor flooding expected until early Saturday morning and river levels set to fall below flood stage tomorrow afternoon. Tribune-Star
- ➤ The Excel Center of West Central Indiana moved upstairs to its new, renovated space at the Meadows Shopping Center last month and staff as well as students are pleased with the improvements—marking a milestone after nearly four years of planning. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Duke Energy crews worked overnight to restore power to about 9,200 customers after a severe storm caused outages, restoring nearly 70 percent of service by midnight. Today, crews continue repairing fallen trees and broken power poles - residents are urged to report downed lines to 1-800-521-2232. WTHI-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Mike Braun signed a law to reduce health care costs by requiring nonprofit hospitals to adjust their prices to a state-established benchmark based on 2023-2024 data. The law mandates that hospitals with over $2 billion in revenue make these changes by 2029 or lose nonprofit status + it restructures Medicaid funding to improve allocation. WTHI-TV
- ➤ Students from the Drug-Free Vigo County Coalition visited the statehouse this week to meet with Senator Greg Goode who praised their efforts to fight substance abuse and called them 'great representatives' of the Wabash Valley (District 38). WTWO
- ➤ Mitch Roob, the social services secretary, said his agency will change the Healthy Indiana Plan for low- and middle-income Hoosiers if Congress approves a federal bill that cuts provider taxes—his HIP 3.0 plan with work requirements and wellness incentives will be presented Wednesday before the State Budget Committee. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ In July, Horizon Health will offer sports physicals at clinics including one in Terre Haute for $25, and half the fee—$12.50—will be donated to the booster club chosen by the student. The physicals will not be billed to insurance, while school physicals that meet requirements are also available at primary clinics. WTWO
- ➤ Union Health and HCA filed an application for a Certificate of Public Advantage on February 5 and the Indiana Department of Health is still reviewing it, with a final decision due by November 9. Hospital officials warn that if the merger does not go through, Terre Haute Regional Hospital may close—adding urgency to the ongoing review. WTWO
