COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of the Wabash Valley will host its Serve the Valley event on July 25—bringing together 400 volunteers for over 35 projects like pantry sorting, landscaping, school prep, painting and park beautification. Volunteers will start their day with a free breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at the Zorah Shrine Temple before heading out at 8:30 a.m.  WTHI-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Thursday, Duke Energy said it completed a multiyear overhaul of its underground electric network in downtown Terre Haute— a project meant to reduce outages and speed up service restoration. The upgrades are expected to boost the system’s efficiency and resilience.  Tribune-Star

CRIME NEWS

  • Misty Casey faced upgraded charges in Vigo County Court on Thursday for a fatal crash at Oak and 13th Streets that killed two juveniles—and she lost her job, is now represented by a public defender, and her bond remains set at $100,000 with a pre-trial on November 4 and a jury trial on December 12 at 8 a.m.  WTHI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On June 12, out-of-state and international graduate students at Indiana State University raised concerns about proposed tuition increases during a required public hearing on campus. The hearing—mandated by law—must be completed before the board of trustees approves fee hikes for the next two years.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Terre Haute City Council rejected a rezoning request from businessman Greg Gibson that would have allowed apartment construction along Ohio Boulevard—seven council members voted against the proposal while two supported it and local residents voiced approval of the decision.  WTHI-TV
  • Demolition is underway at the former police headquarters site as the city begins a $13 million project to build a three-story complex with 111 one-bedroom units for new downtown residents—Mayor Brandon Sakbun said work is running smoothly, with demolition set to finish next month and construction starting immediately for a fall completion.  WTWO
  • The Terre Haute Fire Department is now accepting applications for firefighter positions for applicants aged 19 to 39 with no felony convictions, a valid driver’s license and a high school diploma or GED—candidates must also have a current physical ability test or C-PAT card. The hiring process includes an aptitude test and interview, and the application period will end on August 31.  WTWO
