A new digital book player was introduced today in Terre Haute to help visually impaired residents live more independently with features like Bluetooth and direct book downloads.

Danny Wayne Beemer from the Indiana Talking Book and Braille Library demonstrated the device at a monthly meeting at the Vigo County Public Library — where other useful resources are shared.

The Indiana Department of Education released its first draft of an updated school accountability model on Wednesday—focusing on academic mastery, career readiness, communication, work ethic, and literacy—with a public comment period now open and further drafts scheduled for late summer/early fall before a final rule is expected by Dec. 31. This draft also introduces a grading scale that measures key milestones from grade 3 through grade 12.

Today, Terre Haute began updating its signs after a brand refresh—starting with the welcome sign at U.S. 41 and Maple Avenue.

City officials said other signs will be replaced as needed when they become worn.

Terre Haute is starting summer road paving projects with a $3.6 million budget for modernizing city streets — Mayor Sakbun said drivers should expect closures and delays as crews work in phases from Thirteenth to Seventeenth Streets and along Twenty Second Street, with work finishing by October.

Terre Haute City Clerk Michelle Edwards reported Wednesday that her office received scam texts asking recipients to pay bogus traffic tickets — the texts are not from any court or clerk's office.

Thrive West Central officially opened 42 townhomes on Terre Haute's east side today as part of its (Homes for the Future Program).

Each home offers over 1,900 square feet, sidewalks, paved roads and a dog park, and will be sold for about mid-$300,000.

Terre Haute resident and Northview High School student Will Kinne qualified for the 2025 US Rowing Youth National Championship, making him the first rower from Wabash Valley Crew to earn the honor.

The championships will be held in Sarasota from June 12-15.
