COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Crews in Deming Park are repairing the Spirit of Terre Haute miniature train as the Parks and Recreation Department completes maintenance and upgrades—weather permitting it will run daily from noon to 6 p.m. from June 20 to August 9.  Tribune-Star
  • Vigo County YMCA broke ground on a major expansion that will add 15,000 to 20,000 sqft to the facility with a new health & wellness area and expanded childcare space, building on last year’s indoor pool update. The project is set to finish by summer 2027.  WTHI-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Community Theatre of Terre Haute will celebrate its 100th anniversary with an end-of-season event today. The free event will include the opening of a 1998 time capsule at 6 p.m. (followed by a reception at 6:30 and the Talley Awards at 7:30).  WTHI-TV
  • Terre Haute’s Larry Bird Museum will celebrate its 2-year anniversary this weekend after nearly 19,000 visitors since its 2024 opening. The museum opens at 10 a.m. on Sunday and hosts a Hoops Heritage Day on Monday (with a T-shirt giveaway and a chance to sign Larry Bird’s 70th birthday card).  WTHI-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Longtime businesses have left downtown, but Mayor Brandon Sakbun is confident a revival is near today. He believes new openings could boost our historic district — a view that recalls a former governor’s economic analogy.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Senior Emma MacDonald raised funds at Terre Haute North Vigo High School to support Riley Hospital for Children after experiencing hospital care as a patient; she graduates Sunday and aims to help local children and families with challenging health issues.  Tribune-Star
  • Richard Goodall will retire from full-time custodial duties at Vigo County School Corp but will continue singing for local audiences. His shift away from waxing floors and cleaning cafeterias marks a new chapter in his career as a performer.  Tribune-Star
  • Tequila Rose Pine, a Booker T. Washington High School graduate, said the alternative program changed her life during her commencement speech (Friday evening at Woodrow Wilson Middle School). Fourteen students finished the program this year.  Tribune-Star
  • Terre Haute North Vigo High School valedictorians shared advice and future plans after graduation, urging classmates to pursue new opportunities (as they step into life beyond high school).  Tribune-Star
  • Vigo County School Corp launched a digital visitor check-in system called Raptor to improve safety at schools. The program was demonstrated at Dixie Bee Elementary on May 29 by school officials overseeing the new process.  Tribune-Star
  • At Woodrow Wilson Middle School on Friday, Vigo Virtual Success Academy graduated 79 students with Alex Morales-Geronimo delivering the commencement speech, highlighting his path of balancing studies with helping his family's businesses.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Indiana Department of Transportation announced lane closures and traffic pattern shifts that will affect U.S. 41 south of Interstate 70 today in Vigo County.  Tribune-Star
