COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WTHI-TV announced that Brady Harp will rejoin Storm Team 10 with Kevin Orpurt and Everett Lau today to provide local weather coverage. Harp (who spent eight years with the station) is eager to reconnect with viewers in his hometown.  WTHI-TV
  • Ceremonies in Terre Haute honored Pearl Harbor veterans five days before Navy Seaman Wayne Edward Newton’s burial on May 16. His second cousin, also a Navy serviceman, led tributes that illuminated the holiday’s meaning.  Tribune-Star
  • Volunteers planted over 1,300 flags on veterans' graves at Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan County on Friday morning before Memorial Day, honoring sacrifices with members of local organizations (including the Sullivan American Legion and DAR) and inspiring community remembrance.  WTHI-TV
  • On Thursday, a developer gave away souvenir bricks from the rubble of the former Chauncey Rose and Gerstmeyer schools to alumni and locals ahead of a new housing project. Next month, the site will host a practice military operation — marking a new phase for the area.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cathedral High School honored Sister Mary Ann Stewart — a local native and a member of the Sisters of Providence — during its commencement on May 18.  Tribune-Star
  • Two Indiana State University education leaders, Holly Curtsinger and Dr. Yong Joon Park, have been chosen for a Harvard Graduate School of Education program aimed at building strategic leadership in early childhood education systems; the program begins this fall.  Tribune-Star
  • Vigo students and art teachers were honored at the International Violin Competition in Indianapolis, where 30 Streeter Hadley Matthews Grand Award winners and 120 Regional Winners were recognized. More than 11,000 students from 119 schools across Indiana participated in preliminary rounds for the juried student art exhibition.  Tribune-Star
  • Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College announced an update to its MBA program that integrates all specialized concentrations into the 36-credit-hour curriculum (previously offered as additional credit hours), allowing students to earn focused expertise without extending their graduation timeline.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Mike Braun said he may extend the gas tax suspension under Indiana’s energy emergency law and will review the decision in the days before the break ends June 7.  Tribune-Star
  • Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita is investigating 30 fuel retailers for suspected price gouging after Gov. Mike Braun declared an energy emergency in April. The probe follows temporary suspensions of the 7% gasoline sales tax and a 36 cent per gallon excise tax that could affect local driver costs.  Tribune-Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sycamore Pain + Wellness now offers Horizon Health Physical Therapy services led by Danielle Jena and Ashley Fitzanko, providing orthopedic care, spine treatment and soft tissue healing. The service is available now at its Indiana location to support local recovery efforts.  Tribune-Star
  • Sugar Creek Consolidated Elementary rallied support for kindergartener Izzy Thomas, diagnosed with a brain tumor earlier this school year, as special education teacher Kari Beattie (a brain tumor survivor) guided efforts to boost his recovery.  Tribune-Star
