COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Terre Haute and Union Hospital hosted a luncheon today (part of National EMS Week) to honor EMS workers and first responders, with Mayor Brandon Sakbun reading a proclamation and Assistant Chief Nick Miller emphasizing the crews' vital role serving the community.  WTHI-TV
  • The new William Disc Golf Course at Prairie Creek Park will open at 10 a.m. Saturday—marking the start of Aaron Warner’s vision to expand disc golf in Vigo County.  Tribune-Star
  • Billie Creek is hosting the 'It Takes a Village' 5K race on Sunday in Parke County; runners can register at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m. to benefit Parke Vermillion Humane Society (adoptable dogs will be on-site).  WTHI-TV
  • The city of Terre Haute invites residents to attend Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 25, starting at 9 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery — additional events will take place at Highland Lawn Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. and the official ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.  Tribune-Star
  • Families will gather at Hot Pond in Lebanon and Lilly Lake in Eagle Creek Park on June 6 for a kids fishing derby hosted by local organizations — an event that will invite young anglers to learn basic fishing skills and enjoy the outdoors.  Tribune-Star
  • The Friends of Ernie Pyle Development Fund has launched a $250,000 for 250 Years drive to support expansion of the Ernie Pyle & Veterans Memorial Park in honor of our nation’s 250th birthday. The fundraising effort will run through 2026.  Tribune-Star

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local labor unions picketed at the Heartland Industrial Park in Sullivan County after construction began without hiring local workers despite a promise to use regional labor; union leaders say the switch in contractor (Fluidstack replacing the original plan) may hurt local job chances.  WTHI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday evening, 53 adults earned their high school equivalency diplomas at the Learning Lab in Terre Haute (marking a milestone in their educational journeys).  Tribune-Star
  • A national survey by the Afterschool Alliance shows that nearly 425,000 Indiana children are missing out on summer programs due to cost barriers, with only 175,163 enrolled. The report released Tuesday calls for more funding to help families secure safe and engaging summer care.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mark Bennett announced that Turn to the River will host public art and community events at the government campus north of the Vigo County Courthouse and City Hall this summer, fall plus winter. The multi-phase project led by Wabash Valley Art Spaces will connect downtown to the Wabash River.  Tribune-Star
  • AAA predicts 960,000 Hoosiers will travel for Memorial Day weekend and INDOT warns drivers of heavier traffic starting today in Terre Haute. At noon today, some road closures will lift to ease congestion while construction closures remain in place.  WTHI-TV

  • Indiana conservation officers urge families to follow water safety tips ahead of Memorial Day weekend by wearing Coast Guard approved life jackets + going with a buddy, and they warn that intoxicated boat operation is illegal.  WTHI-TV

  • The 20th anniversary Hawthorn Half Day Relay & Ultra offers six-hour and 12-hour race options for runners, walkers & relay teams. It is held Saturday at Hawthorn Park where endurance athletes compete on a scenic 5K loop.  Tribune-Star
