Terre Haute police are probing the death of 93-year-old Betty Ellinger at the Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care — an investigation involving the Indiana Attorney General’s Office, the Indiana Department of Health, and the Vigo County Coroner's Office following an April 29th autopsy.

The EPA has been cleaning up the former Columbian Enameling plant site at 19th and Beech for seven months and has moved over 19,000 tons of asbestos to a landfill 30 minutes south.

The agency received a $500,000 grant to assess the site plus the nearby River East planning area, and it plans to sample basements and soil next to check for contamination and complete removals by early summer.

Vigo County is adding a magistrate judge at the courthouse to help manage the Superior Court caseload after House Bill 1144 created a new position with general jurisdiction.

Judge Charles Johnson said the change expands duties beyond handling juvenile issues + paternity cases.

The City of Terre Haute is launching a six-week Civic Impact Summer Volunteer Program for college students that will offer hands-on service projects and guest lectures at City Hall with lunch provided.

Topics include civil engineering and city planning, and local officials will lead work such as park cleanups and graffiti removal — giving students real experience in public service.
