COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of the Wabash Valley is hosting a Stand Down event for veterans and their families Saturday, May 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. at VFW Post 972 in Terre Haute (in partnership with Disabled American Veterans, Duke Energy and Union Health) to offer local support.  WTHI-TV
  • Wabash Valley Jeep Junkies will host the Going Topless for Pink fundraiser at Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 157 in Terre Haute on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday starting at 8 a.m. to support those fighting breast cancer; donations may be matched if the $100,000 goal is met.  WTHI-TV
  • This spring, the Wabash Valley Community Foundation awarded over $977,000 to roughly 130 nonprofits in Vigo, Clay, and Sullivan counties to support local community programs.  Tribune-Star
  • Course William disc golf course will open May 23 at 10 a.m. at Prairie Creek Park, and it is designed for everyone—even those who have never thrown a disc—as stated by Tavia Hedrick from Vigo County Parks and Recreation.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fifteen South Vigo High School students competed in six championship rounds at Purdue University during the Indiana Academic Super Bowl state finals on Saturday. The event showcased the students' strong academic skills and teamwork.  Tribune-Star
  • Madison Heights High School graduate Jason Williamson will join a Purdue University space crew next year — he was seen at the VSS Unity Galactic 6 launch in 2024.  Tribune-Star
  • Indiana’s new A-F school accountability system will take effect despite objections from Attorney General Todd Rokita after he & Gov. Mike Braun approved a new State Board of Education rule this month. The revised framework concludes a multiyear effort to adjust K-12 graduation requirements and academic ratings.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Indiana Army National Guard soldiers are demolishing a former Boys + Girls Club building on 13th Street as part of a real-world heavy equipment training program today; the site will host advanced rescue training in June.  WTHI-TV
  • The Indiana State Budget Committee approved a $4.2 million plan on Tuesday to renovate the Commons at Indiana State University’s Hulman Memorial Student Union — the project will soon upgrade campus spaces for students and staff.  Tribune-Star
  • David Templeton was named the new chairman of the Terre Haute Economic Development Corporation during Tuesday night’s meeting, following former president Steve Witt’s resignation; he said his leadership will be more strategic + proactive as the organization looks ahead to attract future investment.  WTHI-TV
  • Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun said that the Econolodge off U.S. 41 will have its asbestos removed soon before its eventual demolition, and a private developer plans to build a new hotel on the site.  WTHI-TV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Thrive West Central received $1.65 million in READI 2.0 and $5 million in Lilly Endowment funding for housing and infrastructure improvements in west-central Indiana. Builders and developers are now accepting proposals for project renovations and upgrades.  Tribune-Star

  • A Host City Committee has been formed to prepare for the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships set for Nov. 21 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. The group will bring together local businesses, organizations & residents to create an event that showcases Terre Haute.  Tribune-Star
