EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Indiana State University announced budget cuts—job eliminations and administrative restructuring—on Tuesday. Tribune-Star
- ➤ Dr. Matt Latta, music teacher at Owen Valley High School, has won the Golden Apple Award this year for building strong connections with students—his daily greetings, check-ins, and work on the Spring Cabaret make him a key part of the school culture. WTHI-TV
- ➤ Forest Park Elementary fifth grader Corbin Clingerman won Monday morning's Forest Park 500 race — finishing first and showcasing the students' racing skills in a competitive event. Tribune-Star
- ➤ Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will host a free stargazing open house at Oakley Observatory on Friday, May 16 from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m.—visitors can view planets, nebulae, and galaxies through various telescopes with parking available in the commuter lot just north, and the event will be moved to Saturday, May 17 if weather is poor. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At Tuesday night, the Vigo County Council approved spending measures that include $68,500 for two new GPS units for the Surveyor’s department (replacing equipment over 10 years old). The council voted unanimously 6 to 0 despite concerns about Governor Mike Braun’s state budget (Councilwoman Nancy Allsup was absent due to illness). Tribune-Star
- ➤ The Indiana Department of Transportation announced that alternating single-lane closures will start on U.S. 150 in western Vigo County on or after May 19 for asphalt resurfacing. Full lane closures will be set later and work is expected to continue until November—weather permitting. Tribune-Star
