  • Culver’s will host its 11th annual Scoops of Thanks Day fundraiser on May 1 to support local farmers by donating 100% of proceeds from a $1 frozen custard scoop to FFA chapters — the event will also feature a one-day-only flavor, How Now Brown Cow, with special ingredients that add a twist. This Thank You Farmers Project has donated over $6.5 million to agricultural education since 2013.  WTWO
  • The Salvation Army of Vigo County honored Bob Baesler, owner of Baesler’s Market, for raising more than $200,000 through Red Kettles placed outside his stores during the holiday season. Baesler has hosted bell ringers and given an annual matching gift on key shopping days to spur donations.  Tribune-Star

  • Jeff Ready, a top IT innovator and 1996 computer science graduate, will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary engineering degree at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on May 31—he is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Scale Computing.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Vigo County homeowners saw property assessments increase by up to 40% compared to last year, raising concerns about higher tax bills—Assessor Kevin Gardner said the hikes came from updated cost tables that reflect rising construction costs. Homeowners can file an appeal on the county website if they dispute their assessments.  WTHI-TV
  • Spring Vigo County property tax bills are due May 12 — residents can pay by visiting a participating bank, paying online at LowTaxInfo.com, calling 812-645-4779, dropping off a payment at the annex, or mailing their check to the Treasurer’s Office.  WTHI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Businesses in Vigo, Clay, Parke, Vermillion, Sullivan and Putnam counties can better serve people with dementia by taking specialized training offered by Thrive West Central — developed by Indiana University Health to equip employees with the knowledge to support those with dementia — as the program aims to create a friendlier environment for customers and their care partners.  Tribune-Star
