COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City and county leaders met Wednesday evening at the Hulman Center when the Wabash River Planning Partnership unveiled its Community Riverfront Master Plan proposals. The plan covers seven districts for homes, shops, and parks — and includes a proposal to rename 1st Street to Riverside Drive — setting long-term development goals over the next 5 to 15 years.  WTHI-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A large pothole over 7 feet wide near Walmart and Chavas off U.S. 40 and Wheeler Street in Brazil is causing vehicle damage and several accidents—local companies dispute responsibility for repairs as drivers express growing safety concerns.  WTHI-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • A 57 year old man from Dana — Michael Landers — died from injuries after police shot him during a standoff near East County Road 700 on Wednesday morning; an officer involved was placed on administrative leave as Indiana State Police investigate the incident.  WTWO
  • A man who brandished a firearm during a welfare check was shot by an officer when he pointed his gun at a SWAT team early Wednesday on East County Road 700 near Dana—he was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to a hospital in Champaign, Ill.  WTWO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Indiana House passed House Bill 1499 that gives third grade students two chances to pass the IREAD exam and lets up to 797 English language learners be exempt from retention (until the 2027-2028 school year) as it heads to the governor’s desk. The bill also changes high school career fair rules and lowers work-study hour requirements to boost student and employer participation.  WTHI-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The American Lung Association said Vigo County’s ozone grade dropped from B in 2023 to D in 2024 in its 2025 State of the Air report—officials linked the decline to Canadian wildfires that sent smog across the country and advised residents to monitor air quality daily.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Thrive West Central received ARPA funding from Vigo County for its Homes for the Future initiative—an effort that will address local housing shortages and boost economic development. County commissioners and council members held a special check presentation to underline the county’s commitment to long-term community improvements.  WTHI-TV
  • Road work in the Wabash Valley will force drivers to find new routes as INDOT closes the westbound lane of Hulman Street until 5 p.m. on April 25 for a sinkhole repair and Haymaker Avenue in West Terre Haute from April 23 to April 30 for a culvert replacement. Later, State Road 58 near Elnora will close around April 28 and State Road 154 near Graysville on or near May 7 for chip seal and road maintenance—detours are provided.  WTWO
