COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community Theatre of Terre Haute announced its 2025-26 season heavy on comedy — John Patrick’s play 'A Bad Year for Tomatoes' will open Oct. 3—5 and 10—12. The play will tell a funny story about an actress who goes to New England to write her memoirs and makes up a murderous sister to keep nosy neighbors away.  Tribune-Star

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Drivers are told to avoid I-70 and Darwin Road in Vigo County because a semi-truck fire is blocking the eastbound lanes — emergency crews remain on scene to put out the fire and manage traffic.  WTHI-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Federal inmate Joshua T. Mebane, 29, who had already served multiple sentences for murder, received a life sentence without the possibility of parole for killing a fellow inmate after pleading guilty to first-degree murder on Oct. 23; U.S. Judge James R. Sweeney II sentenced him on April 14 at a Terre Haute prison.  Tribune-Star
  • Federal prosecutors said that federal inmate Joshua T. Mebane, already serving multiple life sentences, was given an additional life sentence for fatally asphyxiating his cellmate Michael Tucker in January 2016 at the Federal Correctional Complex in Terre Haute—correctional officers discovered Tucker during a routine medical appointment call.  WTWO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Swimmers from all five middle schools competed in Monday's preliminary races at the county swimming championship meet, with about 130 participants — a 35% increase over last year. The championship meet will begin today at 5:30 p.m. — final rounds are scheduled to follow.  WTHI-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Although Earth Day was officially Tuesday, ReThink Inc. on South 13th Street has continued its Love the Earth campaign—inviting community members to join The Green Club for 50 cents a day and purchase earth-friendly products. The store will host a block party on May 17 to further support its sustainable living efforts.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Terre Haute Police are monitoring school buses from April 21 through May 2 to check for stop arm violations and aggressive, distracted driving—urging drivers to follow proper stop rules on two-lane and divided highways. Lt. Justin Sears said a violation could lead to an infraction or, in some cases, be elevated to a misdemeanor.  WTWO
