Today, mayor Brandon Sakbun and the city’s urban forester replanted four trees at the government complex hosting City Hall + Vigo County Courthouse to kick off Arbor Day week and strengthen the urban forest.
The effort highlights the city’s commitment to long-term tree care.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management invites eligible residents to apply for free well water testing to track groundwater conditions and detect influences of natural geology or human activity (tests are conducted periodically on qualified private wells).
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources confirmed three cases of chronic wasting disease in wild white-tailed deer (in Noble, Franklin, and Rush counties) during the current hunting season.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is closing State Road 159 at State Road 58 in Freelandville today for an emergency pipe replacement to fix a failed pipe and sinkhole.
Drivers should use the detour via State Road 58 to State Road 67 — repairs will take three days.
Vermillion County has been awarded $495,000 through the Owner-Occupied Rehabilitation Program to help low to moderate-income homeowners cover repairs like roofs, windows, and electrical upgrades (priority is given to those above 65, veterans, single parents, and people with disabilities). Applications will be posted soon with awards set in early summer.
