ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday night, a Trans-care ambulance collided with two bicycling children at the intersection of East Wheeler Avenue and South 13th Street in Terre Haute, leaving one child dead and the other critically injured while police investigated the scene and local students organized a car wash and bake sale to help with funeral expenses and hospital bills.  WTWO

CRIME NEWS

  • Police identified 47-year-old Dale Evans—of Terre Haute—as the suspect in a Tuesday night police-involved shooting in Clay County after he fled officers in a stolen U-Haul truck, which led to a chase and standoff in which an officer was injured.  WTHI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six Terre Haute North Vigo High School students received travel grants to help cover costs for their school-sponsored study abroad programs — the Martha Layton Memorial Fund was created at the Vigo County Education Foundation to honor her legacy. The awards will cut expenses for students seeking opportunities to study outside the United States.  Tribune-Star
  • Officials reported at Wednesday’s board meeting that Terre Haute Aviation Academy is on track to open this November in a building repurposed after 2016 storm damage— the academy will offer training for students from seven surrounding counties in aviation careers such as piloting and aircraft repair.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Terre Haute, working with Vigo County, RiverSCAPE, and Thrive West Central, invited residents to a free unveiling of riverfront plans held on Wednesday at the Hulman Center Atrium at 200 N Eighth St — the event explained ideas to turn the area into a lively spot for locals and visitors.  Tribune-Star
  • The Indiana Department of Health will host a town hall meeting on May 1 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Oakley Auditorium on Ivy Tech’s Terre Haute campus to hear public comments on the proposed merger of Union Hospital and Regional Hospital (COPA has been filed), and a decision on the merger will come by August 13.  WTHI-TV
  • On April 16th, the Indiana Senate passed a bill by a vote of 33-16 that will remove judges from 11 mostly rural counties, and Vigo County will gain a magistrate position under the measure.  Tribune-Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • During National Donate Life Month in April, a Terre Haute family honors donor hero Trevor Scamihorn, whose organs saved five lives after his tragic accident in 2021—more than 100,000 people now await life-saving transplants while 17 die daily. His daughter works with the Indiana Donor Network to urge families to discuss and register for organ donation.  WTHI-TV
