COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Terre Haute Firefighter Kayla Lueking completed the Vermillion Trails Alliance Victory Races 5K in full gear—using a self-contained breathing apparatus and carrying a Haligan tool—to support mental health awareness for first responders. She has raised $2,500 so far and donations will continue to be accepted to help her cause.  WTWO

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Registration is now open for the second cohort of the Intern Experience IN West Central Indiana program—an eight-week series that connects interns with local professionals and community events. Businesses need to enroll their interns by May 9 to participate.  WTWO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology announced it has received a $10 million gift from alumnus Niles Noblitt and his wife (Nancy) to start a new entrepreneurship program today. The program (designed to foster innovation and business opportunities for students) will give them practical entrepreneurship training.  Tribune-Star
  • Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology announced a $10 million gift from alumnus Niles Noblitt and his wife (Nancy) to create the Noblitt Entrepreneurship Program, which will give students hands-on experience and faculty mentorship; more details will be shared soon.  WTHI-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Seven conservation groups and local governments in the Wabash Valley received grants from Duke Energy Foundation to support environmental projects that revitalize parks, extend trails, boost outreach, and improve water quality—each grant aimed at enhancing local green spaces and educational opportunities.  WTWO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kristi Howe, who has led the Vigo County Public Library since 2012, is stepping down in May — she will become the executive director at Fox River Valley Public Library District. The library made the announcement this afternoon.  Tribune-Star
  • Vigo County Public Library's Executive Director Kristi Howe announced she will step down in May with her last day scheduled for May 9—she will then begin as executive director of Fox River Valley Public Library later that month. The library board will choose an interim director on April 21—Howe led major improvements since 2012 that earned the library three awards from the Indiana Library Federation.  WTHI-TV
  • The City of Terre Haute launched the Safe Streets Terre Haute initiative to reduce serious injuries and fatal crashes on city roads using a $200,000 SS4A grant. Data analysis will take place in Winter, public outreach in Spring, a draft Safety Action Plan will be presented in Summer, and the final plan is expected in September while residents are invited to join community outreach on Saturday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  WTWO
