COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thursday evening, Vigo County CASA held a fundraising event at Texas Roadhouse to raise funds for its programs and purchase items for children in need. CASA Supervisor Janet Hoff said the event was important because the county has high rates of child abuse and neglect — recent cutbacks made support even more crucial.  WTWO

CRIME NEWS

  • Montez Ellington Jr. pleaded guilty at the Vigo County Courthouse today for the 2021 murder of Chloe Carroll, who was fatally shot while sitting in a car at a local gas station, and he agreed to a 45-year sentence with his sentencing hearing set for May 1.  WTWO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Duke Energy announced that about 1,000 West Terre Haute customers are eligible for a free home energy makeover—details in a company news release indicate the program will help reduce energy costs.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State Senator Greg Goode from Terre Haute added Amendment 33 to House Bill 1002 to let Vigo County transfer funds to the school corporation and form a local oversight board for spending oversight — the proposal will now move to the Senate Committee on Appropriation for further review.  WTWO
  • Indiana State University alumni Nick and Makayla McCollum (class of 2019) and Kate Sullivan (class of 2016) have established two endowed scholarships to aid students with additional financial needs, school officials said Thursday.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Saturday, March 29, INDOT will shift lanes on I-70 between U.S. 41 and Thompson Ditch as part of the bridge replacement work over 7th Street and the CSX railroad—crews will reposition lanes and conduct nighttime closures for a few months with the overall project finishing by the end of 2025.  WTHI-TV
  • The Indiana Department of Transportation announced new lane closures and a traffic pattern change on I-70 near Terre Haute that will begin on Saturday. Crews will move the left eastbound lane across the median into the westbound lanes—while the right eastbound lane shifts to the shoulder and both westbound lanes move toward the shoulder.  Tribune-Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Indiana health officials received notice from the CDC that about $40 million in funds for state and local health departments will be clawed back for COVID-19 efforts—money used for testing, vaccination, and community health programs. The department said it is evaluating the impact to make sure services for Hoosiers remain available.  WTHI-TV
