COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Rotary Club in Terre Haute honored a local member on March 24 at a club meeting, recognizing the honoree for long-standing community service (club leaders noted the impact of the contribution).  WTHI-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local leaders and artists met with READI officials (READI 2.0) this morning to plan funding for arts and culture projects statewide, with applicants encouraged to partner for better chances at funding; the application deadline is April 15.  WTHI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana State University's Scott College of Business (ISU) will host a high school pitch competition on April 27 in Terre Haute featuring 10 local entrepreneurial teams as they prepare to present their business ideas.  Tribune-Star
  • School administrators say students in Terre Haute are increasingly using AI to remove clothing from classmates’ social media photos (an emerging trend that poses challenges as schools have few viable options). They are working on solutions to address the misuse.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting July 1, Indiana bans camping on public property not meant for shelter. The Terre Haute Police Department will use a graded approach, giving a warning+ referrals to social workers and community partners with 48 hours for people to leave before more enforcement takes effect.  WTHI-TV
  • Indiana regulators questioned the state’s biggest energy providers on Tuesday about high rates & customer service as frustration grew among ratepayers. Utility reps said high bills were driven by customer usage influenced by extreme temperatures, insulation, and appliance efficiency.  Tribune-Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Free oral cancer screenings will be offered Saturday, Apr. 11 from 8 a.m. to Noon at the Mollie Wheat Memorial Clinic in the Landsbaum center in Terre Haute to catch early signs of cancer + adults under 45 can also receive the HPV vaccine and oral care supplies.  WTHI-TV
  • A new report by the Indiana Business Health Collaborative shows Indiana lags behind neighboring states in primary care and preventive services, with fewer doctors, lower cancer screening rates, and fewer annual child checkups. Researchers from Indiana University-Indianapolis released the findings Monday and urge investments in prevention to cut future healthcare costs.  WTHI-TV
