COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank transports food every day with its mobile pantry initiative that serves Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley—its program received a grant from the city’s American Rescue Plan funds to help reach food deserts with low-income families.  Tribune-Star
  • WTWO has organized Pack It Back for Summer to fill backpacks with food and supplies for students facing meal uncertainty over the break—local businesses and residents have donated items at Toyota of Terre Haute and Baesler’s Market until May 9th while the Vigo County School Corporation will deliver the bags.  WTWO

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today the Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting for Hungry Howie’s Pizza at Wabash and Brown in a building that was once an unused car wash—located near the owner’s gas station. The same owners also run two other Hungry Howie’s locations.  WTHI-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Two Terre Haute men were charged with murder and attempted murder for a shooting on March 20 near 13th ½ Street in northern Vigo County — a 46-year-old man was killed while a 33-year-old woman remains in critical condition at an Indianapolis hospital and 18-year-old Joshua Torpy, the victim’s nephew, surrendered leading to the arrest of his friend Kyle Peretti.  WTHI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Vigo School Board approved three new high school pathways—specialized programs that meet graduation requirements and the new diploma seal system—to be offered to students starting next school year.  Tribune-Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lane closures are in place on State Road 63 near Universal over Brouilletts Creek as crews replace the bridge deck. Southbound traffic is reduced to one lane with alternating closures — northbound lanes remain open and work will continue through August subject to weather.  WTHI-TV
  • The Indiana Department of Transportation warned drivers about a scam that sends fake text messages claiming unpaid tolls. Officials said the messages—which threaten late fees and vehicle registration suspension (claims not made by INDOT)—are false and should be deleted immediately.  WTHI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health First Indiana, launched in 2023 to boost public health funding, will see a modest $25 million reduction over the next two-year cycle as the state switches from planned escalating funds of $75 million and $150 million to a flat $100 million per year—this change comes amid a tight budget year.  Tribune-Star
