COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Terre Haute City Council voted Thursday to honor Carl Ross, who died in 1961 while defusing a bomb at a YWCA that saved 51 lives. A Black History Month banner hung at the corner of Sixth and Wabash in downtown marked the tribute.  Tribune-Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Vigo County Public Library started its NEA Big Read program today with a $20K grant from the National Endowment for the Arts; the program features Bite by Bite: Nourishments and Jamborees, a memoir that explores food and memory and will host community events.  WTHI-TV
  • The Terre Haute Symphony League is hosting its second annual Luminous Strings event at the Red Barn tonight and tomorrow. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with concerts beginning at 7:30 p.m. as the THSO string quartet performs American rock music to fund community engagement programs.  WTHI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new Weekend Meal Program began today at Vigo County schools to provide balanced meals for students facing food insecurity when school is not in session. Coordinated by the Vigo County School Corp. Coordinated Health Program (a Union Health initiative), the program will expand access during weekends.  Tribune-Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A flood watch remains in effect until noon EST today for parts of central and west central Indiana (including Vigo county) after 3 to 5 inches of heavy rainfall in the past 48 hours may cause rivers, creeks, and streams to flood. Residents in low-lying areas should stay alert.  Tribune-Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local food safety inspections from Feb. 23 to Feb. 28 found several restaurants scoring perfectly such as Casey's and Jimmy John's while others, including Sushi Lovers Hibachi & Third St. Petro, faced multiple violations with temperature and hygiene issues.  WTHI-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana State's 25-26 basketball season was challenging as the team struggled to win games, but Athletic Director Nathan Christensen remains optimistic about future improvements and plans to rebuild the squad through intensive practice sessions (he sees steady progress in coaching and development).  Tribune-Star
