COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Camp Navigate is hosting its Community Challenge this Saturday at Woodrow Wilson Middle School with games like pickleball, cornhole, dodgeball + tug-of-war to help fund free youth programs. Teams of up to 10 can register to join the local event.  WTHI-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce hosted ribbon cutting ceremonies on Thursday to open Crew Car Wash — and to introduce a Jimmy John's restaurant along Indiana 46 near Meijer.  WTHI-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Terre Haute South High School celebrated Black History Month today with vibrant dance and music in its auditorium that honored Black culture and the struggle for freedom. MCs Brylee Jackson, Bryson Jackson, Jazlyn Kelley, and Emeilyah Sands introduced performers including Alpha Kappa Alpha + Alpha Phi Alpha.  Tribune-Star
  • Two well-known Boone County painters will display impressionist art on March 5 at Sugar Creek Art Center in its first spring exhibition. The show includes Mary Ann Davis (a top Plein Air painter known for her landscapes, still life and portraits).  Tribune-Star
  • A new marker will be installed to honor the Romanian community's role during Terre Haute's golden age in the early 1900s, preserving a key part of the city's cultural heritage for future generations.  Tribune-Star
  • Indiana State University is hosting Hidden History to celebrate Black History Month with African-American murals, a talk by local historian Crystal Reynolds, and student presentations (this evening from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Charles E. Brown Cultural Center).  WTHI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana State University is gearing up for its 2026 Homecoming celebration by planning a week-long series of events with a parade and a football game on Oct. 10 at Memorial Stadium—a contest against Youngstown State that will reconnect students and alumni.  WTHI-TV
  • Vigo County Public Library will launch its 2026 NEA Big Read on Saturday with the memoir 'Bite by Bite: Nourishments and Jamborees' by Aimee Nezhukumatathil; the program received a $20,000 grant from NEA and Arts Midwest to spark community conversation about food, memory and culture.  Tribune-Star
  • Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology raised the final steel beam on Feb. 19 to cap the top of its new Ventures building (35,000 sqft built with 166,000 pounds of steel) as part of the Innovation Grove project; it will be finished in December.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Greg Goode's bill to update Ivy Tech's programs passed unanimously in the Senate and now goes to the governor's desk. The legislation aims to align the college's governance with Indiana's evolving workforce needs.  Tribune-Star
  • The Vigo County Oversight Board reviewed the school corporation's bonding capacity at a Thursday meeting and learned that VCSC can fund modernization of West Vigo High School and classroom additions for three elementary schools while keeping its current tax rate.  Tribune-Star
  • The Indiana Department of Transportation launched Project Greenlight this week to improve worker safety by installing flashing green lights that alert drivers to nearby road workers during low-visibility times — the new system will soon be used in our area around Terre Haute.  Tribune-Star
  • The Indiana Senate approved Senate Bill 78 to ban cellphones for the entire school day with a 36-12 vote on Wednesday and sent it to Gov. Mike Braun (pending his final signoff) for approval.  Tribune-Star
  • The Vigo County Oversight Board met Thursday morning to review VCSC’s finances for a new east-side high school (approx. $222M project) and renovations at three elementary schools while scheduling public comment sessions at 5:30 p.m. on March 16 and March 26 at the county annex.  WTHI-TV
  • The Indiana Senate approved Senate Bill 78 by a 36 to 12 vote to require schools to lock away cellphones and similar devices throughout the school day, and the measure is headed to the governor—if signed, its restrictions take effect July 1 to reduce distractions.  WTHI-TV
