CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ In autumn 1978, the Eugene V. Debs Foundation in Terre Haute honored Rev. Jesse Jackson for fighting workplace racism (his candid style earned him the annual Debs Award) and recognized his lasting impact on labor, public service and education. Tribune-Star
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Southwest Parke Community School Corp is facing tough choices as declining enrollment and lower tax revenue from Senate Enrolled Act 1 prompt changes; the superintendent said SEA 1 (the new policy) is dramatically shifting the playing field. Tribune-Star
- ➤ Indiana State University plans a $4.2 million renovation of the Hulman Memorial Student Union Commons, which will include relocating the campus bookstore after the Board of Trustees met on Friday. The school will seek state approvals for design and construction as the project moves forward. Tribune-Star
- ➤ The National Weather Service is hosting free storm spotter training courses in the Wabash Valley this spring. One session is on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. in Washington, and only participants 18+ are eligible as official spotters. WTHI-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Lotus Center warming center will open Sunday at 4 p.m. and remain open until Monday at 9 a.m. — the city announced. Tribune-Star
- ➤ Mayor Brandon Sakbun seeks community input on two plans to upgrade Oakley Playground in Deming Park. Option A starts in September with a project costing 1.3M dollars (funded by private grants), while Option B will close the playground from September 2026 to June 2027 for extensive ADA and equipment improvements. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters in Terre Haute received comprehensive screening tests as part of annual physicals, which in 2023 were introduced to catch cancer and other health issues early. Tim Murphey and his colleagues saw actionable findings (heart, liver, kidney issues and possible cancer) that may have saved lives, according to department leaders. WTHI-TV
