CULTURE NEWS

  • Indiana State University will host its 51st annual Jazz Festival on Saturday, Feb. 21 at University Hall. The School of Music has planned performances and masterclasses at local schools starting at 8 a.m.  Tribune-Star
  • West Terre Haute native Tim Carroll had his song recorded by late folk-country singer John Prine — one of America's greatest composers known for his smart songwriting, marking a milestone for local talent.  Tribune-Star
  • The Country Club and Spruce Street A.M.E. Church and Parsonage were added to the National Register of Historic Places in January as part of Indiana’s 10 new listings in Vigo County. The update honors our community’s rich heritage — a nod to historic landmarks in Terre Haute.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The House Education Committee advanced Senate Bill 78 on Wednesday to require students to power off and lock away cellphones during school and tighten rules on youth social media use (a measure debated for weeks). The bill now moves to a full House vote.  Tribune-Star
  • The Indiana House Education Committee advanced two youth tech bills after weeks of debate — one bill requires students to keep phones locked away during school and another revises social media guidelines for minors — and both measures will move next to a full House vote.  WTHI-TV
  • Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College raised $1,949,776 from 1,511 donors during Tuesday's 11th annual Woods Giving Day event in Terre Haute (a historic milestone) that underscores strong community support.  Tribune-Star
  • School officials and consultants presented preliminary designs for a new high school during a Thursday meeting that estimated the project cost (about $222 million) for a facility spanning 100 acres to serve 2,700 students. The project will be financed with municipal bonds and awaits further county financial review this spring.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Terre Haute City Council approved Project Fix-em on Thursday evening at City Hall; the pilot program will subsidize dog spay and neuter surgeries at the Humane Society clinic at 1811 S. Fruitridge Ave, with the city covering $75 per surgery and owners paying $25 including a rabies vaccine.  Tribune-Star

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Terre Haute will replace blighted properties with new infill housing, with mayor Brandon Sakbun saying that building inside will boost the tax base and relieve city service strains. The initiative has already attracted out-of-town buyers + set a promising stage for local growth.  WTHI-TV
