COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Earl Higbie (Vigo County's oldest veteran and WWII Air Force pilot) celebrated his 104th birthday at Sycamore Manor on Saturday, Feb. 7 with family, friends, and community recognition. The American Legion placed a commemorative brick on Feb. 8 to honor him.  WTHI-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Indiana Economic Development Corp and the Indiana Arts Commission are hosting a public kickoff webinar for the READI Arts and Culture Initiative (READI 2.0) today at 3 p.m. The session will cover eligibility, application, and evaluation criteria for arts projects set to begin in 2026.  Tribune-Star
  • Wabash Valley Art Spaces received $800,000 from the Terre Haute Casino Foundation to fund the Turn to the River project. The multi-year initiative will create an event space near City Hall with public art + civic improvements, and construction is expected later this year.  WTHI-TV
  • The Vigo County Public Library is hosting this year’s Big Read featuring Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s Bite by Bite: Nourishments and Jamborees. The event, sponsored by the library and the National Endowment for the Arts, offers local readers a chance to enjoy good food + engaging stories.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana State University ended its funding for Crossroads Repertory Theatre Monday afternoon to address budget pressures+ ensure long-term financial sustainability, according to a news release signed by interim provost Brad Balch.  Tribune-Star
  • The Vigo County Oversight Board toured local schools — including South Vigo High and West Vigo Middle and High School — to assess facility needs and plan six potential changes to be discussed at a meeting on Feb. 12.  WTHI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • City and county officials met Friday with an Indiana DNR biologist to review reports of dead crows — 500 were collected on Feb. 4 and Feb. 5 in mid-town, including 190 near Wabash Avenue and 50 on Friday, with testing for avian flu planned.  WTHI-TV
