COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials conducted the federal Point in Time count on Wednesday at the Pathways warming center in Terre Haute as many homeless residents sought shelter from the cold. Samantha Miller, 40, and her boyfriend with two dogs have been staying there since Friday, receiving meals, showers and laundry services.  Tribune-Star
  • After the funeral director's sudden illness forced a temporary closure, the Vigo County Coroner’s Office took possession of four bodies from Greiner Funeral Home and notified families about new funeral arrangements for three individuals.  WTHI-TV
  • City officials held a groundbreaking at Deming Park Pool, marking the start of a project to renovate the bathhouse and pool with improved accessibility and features for children and adults.  WTHI-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • New banners for Black History Month have been revealed at a Wednesday evening ceremony at the Vigo County History Center & family members from across the country attended to honor the honorees. Terre Haute Human Relations Commission Director Anne-Therese Ryan revived the tradition during the event.  Tribune-Star
  • Yacht Rock Revue will perform its Yacht Rock Forever show at Hatfield Hall on Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. The band will play soft-rock tracks from Steely Dan, Michael McDonald & Hall Oates to warm up winter chills.  Tribune-Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Vigo County Schools have moved to live e-learning this week (using Google Meet to host interactive math lessons) to boost student engagement. Deputy Superintendent John Newport said teachers practiced the format in advance while officials plan to add school days if needed.  WTHI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Vigo County Capital Improvement Board approved $400K for Wabash Valley Crew to build a boathouse in a box near the Girl Scout building in Fairbanks Park next to the Wabash River, and Commissioner Chris Switzer returned to the board after planning to step down.  Tribune-Star
  • After the recent winter storm, USPS said mail delivery is delayed since carriers only attempt routes on safe, passable roads (residents should keep sidewalks, walkways, and mailbox areas clear of snow and ice).  WTHI-TV

  • Following recent weather cancellations, Versiti needs O-negative and O-positive blood as donors rally to support local hospitals (donations can be made at the 2021 South Third Street facility or via the website).  WTHI-TV
